If you are fast enough, you should be able to wipe out multiple stacks in the first couple months with you concentrated troops. The first couple months are crucial because their troops and their allies' are scattered and their morale is still recovering.

You should be able to call in your allies if you promise them French land. When your troops are ready to fight, click refuse to surrender Maine button and go to war with France. Suppose the France doesn't have good allies, and you think you can win, before you click no in the event panel, immediately hire mercenary to build up to your force limit and station all your troops in French or Province border (depends which side has an army stationed). But most of the time, you should be able to fight off the French if you have enough allies that will join your war. So, what would you do when the Surrender of Maine event fires?
